Frequently Asked
Questions
- What Makes Presbyterians Different?
As Presbyterians, we are one of, if not the only, denomination named for its form of government. The Presbyterians get their name from the Greek word for "elder," which is how we are governed. Each church elects for itself a team of elders which is the decision making body within the church.
- What Makes Wabash Unique?
At Wabash, we feel what makes us unique is that we strive to not necessarily
'do church' the way it has been done forever. We are quick to admit our neediness and utter dependence upon
God and the grace He has shown us through Jesus Christ. We strive to not put on any airs or try
to appear as something we are not. One phrase you might hear bantered around Wabash is that we consider ourselves "one beggar showing another beggar where he has found food."
- What Is Your View on Baptism?
We believe baptism is an outward sign of God's inward grace, illustrating the cleansing that has taken place spiritually when one confesses Jesus Christ as Lord and
Savior. Some desire baptism for their children as a sign of
that child being welcomed into a covenant relationship with the rest of the church body. Some prefer to dedicate their children to God, recognizing them as a gift, and save baptism as a response made by the child or young adult when confessing faith. Pastor Dakin is more than happy to further discuss these options with you.
- May I Take Communion?
You bet! We feel as if communion is reserved for those that confess Jesus Christ as Lord and savior. We often say the communion table is not Wabash's table, it is the Lord's table, and if Christ is your savior, you are invited to partake!
- How do I become a member?
From time to time classes are offered that ready you for membership. In these classes we cover our basic doctrinal beliefs, how we do ministry here at Wabash, as well as offer
the opportunity to ask questions about the church, etc. Following these classes, interested folks would then meet with the elders to share how they came to faith and are then subsequently approved for membership. The last step in the process is to publicly welcome new members into worship by the congregation as a whole and celebrate with you as a new member!
- Is Membership a Requirement?
Only to serve as a deacon or elder in the church and to vote in congregational meetings is membership required. While we stress membership as a tangible way to affirm your part in the body, it is not required to attend or to participate in church activities or to receive communion.
- What is the name of George Jetson's Dog?
Astro, of course, unless he is pronouncing it himself which would then be "rastro"
- How Should I Address the Clergy?
Pastor Dakin is ordained in the Presbyterian Church USA and is more than comfortable with George, Pastor George, or Pastor Dakin, but is most comfortable with George. He remembers well the words of his grandfather who said "call me anything, just don't call me late for dinner!"
- What Do I Wear to Service?
We are very casual at Wabash so you should dress comfortably. Especially in the summer months, we realize that many will come to worship prior to heading out with their families or friends to hike or play, so coming to worship in casual clothes is fine. You wouldn't "stick out" in a tie, a dress, or in shorts!

- How Do I Get To Heaven?
The most succinct answer comes from the book of Romans in the New Testament. It reads:
"…if you confess with your mouth ‘Jesus is Lord' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."
- Romans 10:9
Getting to heaven, receiving salvation, we believe is a gift from God, only through Jesus Christ who said of himself
"I am the way, the truth and the life; no one comes to the
Father except through me."
- John 14:6
If you would desire someone to explain this further or to take time to pray with you, please don't hesitate to call the church office or speak to Pastor George or one of the elders on Sunday.
